Transparentify

Something not working?

Email support@cmdv.dev. Say which version of macOS and Transparentify you are using, what you did, and what you expected. If a particular image gives a poor result, attaching it, or one like it, is the fastest way to get a useful answer. Transparentify has no network access, so nothing is sent automatically; a report only reaches us if you choose to send it.

Common questions

Part of the subject was cut away, or something unwanted was kept.

Draw a box around the subject you want. Transparentify looks again inside that box only, which fixes most cases where part of a subject was missed or a neighbouring object came along. For anything left over, use the touch-up brush to paint back what was cut away or erase what should not be there. Every stroke can be undone.

The chair, bag, or prop a person is holding disappeared.

Objects that touch a person are sometimes left out. Draw a box around everything you want to keep, person and object together, and process again.

There is a faint halo or colour fringe around the edge.

Transparentify removes the old background's colour from edge pixels automatically, but on some images a fringe remains. Nudge the inset slider to trim it, or the feather slider to soften the outline.

Hair or fur looks simplified.

Fine strands keep real partial transparency on most photos. Against a busy background, edges can still come out simplified. A larger, sharper original helps more than any setting.

A photo has several people or objects. How do I keep only one?

Each subject is shown separately. Click one to keep only it, or shift-click to keep any combination.

Results change when I move the box slightly.

This happens on small or low-resolution images, where a few pixels make a large difference to what the model sees. Use the highest-resolution version of the image you have.

Can I put the subject on a colour instead of transparency?

Yes. Choose a solid background colour before you save, and the subject is composited onto it.

How do I process a whole folder?

Open the folder, or select several files, and every image is processed and saved as name-nobg.png beside the original. Nothing outside that folder is touched.

Which formats can it open, and what does it save?

It opens JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL, PSD, and camera RAW from all major brands, at full resolution. Output is always PNG, 8 bits per channel, with or without transparency.

Why is the app around 460 MB?

Most of that is the image model, which ships inside the app so that your photos never need to leave your Mac.

Does it work on an Intel Mac?

Transparentify requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later. Apple silicon is recommended, where processing typically takes under a second per image.
